Motor Wheel Lofts - Lansing MI

This is where I live, in a turn-of-the-last-century factory converted to lofts. The photos outside were taken on the morning of 15 May 2007, on the evening of which we had the storm in which I became a drowned rat while walking home. The photos inside (except for the first) were taken on the 18th, after I pretty much had things arranged as I wanted them. (More photos, of the neighborhood and of my bookcases and ceilings.)

PHOTO 1
Early evening through the window, looking toward the northern part of the 'L'. The rooftop in the foreground is part of an office building, also made from the old Motor Wheel complex, as is the Lansing North Police Precinct headquarters.
PHOTO 2
Across Saginaw, which is one-way. The bridge is the railway that runs on the east side of the building. It's the northern part of the 'L' that is along Saginaw. The window of my loft is the third left from the smokestack in the south wing.
PHOTO 3
Closer view. In the high resolution image (clickez) you can see the scale of the building in relation to the cars parked around it.
PHOTO 4
From Saginaw I turn right on Pennsylvania, going past Eastern High School. On the far left is the Don Johnson Field House.
PHOTO 5
At MSU; that's the wing of the Student Services Building in which I work, on the left behind the trees. I live and work on the third floor of old buildings, descending to surface level for transit. (That gives me an idea for a story...)
PHOTO 6
My view as I enter the third floor of the SSB. This wing is mostly vacant on this floor, which was the former offices of the State News. The LBGTRC is at the far end, on the right. I posted a photo of the door some time ago.
PHOTO 7
My work space, where I am typing these words. This is to the left of the bunk bed shown in the next photo. And no, I don't at all mind feeling like I'm living on the set for Blade Runner, Brazil or Max Headroom. If life's a stage, I'm on it!
PHOTO 8
To the right of the bunk bed is where I read and think and sometimes write and draw. At the right in the photo you see part of the eight-foot high sliding door that is the bedroom entrance. It's hung with industrial hardware, of course.
PHOTO 9
A glimpse into my live-in closet. I mean, really; I could put a twin bed in there, easy. I can barely reach the top shelves, on tip-toe.
PHOTO 10
My fabulous shower. You can see the reflection of the facing wall, shown in the next photo. Remember the scale; that shower head is like eight foots up! It's like showering in the rain; it's awesome!
PHOTO 11
Laundry and storage, across from the shower. The door leads into the area with the toilet and sink. The bookcase to the right is across from the bunk bed.
PHOTO 12
The so-called bathroom, in which bathing does not take place. (Yes, that's Karl, with Chinese writing. See my footnote about cultural revolution art.)
PHOTO 13
The north side of the living/kitchen area. Most of my ancestors were Welsh or Irish. Perhaps one reason I have a thing for dragons.
PHOTO 14
The kitchen wall. Note that the counter and appliances are built up to fit the scale of this place.
PHOTO 15
South side of living/kitchen area. The footlocker was one of my father's in WW II, which I painted and took to college. I'm a tree-hugger and former Zero Population Growth activist. The ultra-green stance of MWL is one of its attractions for me.
PHOTO 16
Looking toward the hallway that leads to the 'bathroom,' bedroom and door. The top of the microwave is six feet from the floor; the ceiling is at least another eight feet about that.

In case you missed them, here are some photos I took while moving in, that show the ceilings.

Footnote about wall art

Some of the wall hangings in the bedroom and bathroom are from the so-called cultural revolution era in mainland China. I have these items not because I think Mao was cool (absolutely not), but because I have an interest in art used in propaganda. Ahem.
