Online Comics
I've divided the strips here into two broad categories: Those
having to do specifically with trans
characters and issues, and everything
else.
I've also begun including manga in my
genderqueer fiction list.

Sequential Tart
and Yuricon.

Latest update: 18 July 2008.
These comics have trans and/or genderqueer content, or are
drawn by people who are out as trans. Many are drawn by people
in college and/or starting careers, so the update frequency can be a
little uneven. Some may no longer be updated, but are worth reading.

-
"The story of a boy who thought he could be a woman so well, he
moved in with one. And the chaos that followed." Jenn Dolari has
been writing and drawing comic strips since 1992 or so. She also
does A Wish for Wings
and organizes the Day of Remembrance
webcomc project.
-
El
Goonish Shive. 2002-now.
-
Indescribably delicious? Wacky? Goonishy? Yeh, all that. Frequent
gender bending and swapping. Furry nudity. Not so gentle probing
of sexual and species boundaries. Relationship stuff. Very good!
Books
available!
-
Eternity. 2007.
- A promising new comic.
-
From
Then On Forth. 2003-now.
-
Seth's journey of self-discovery toward being Rachel.
No longer updating. Web MA
-
Happy But Dead.
2004-2007.
- Uh, how about... "A guy trapped in a girl trapped in a guy trapped
in a girl's body. Although genetic testing accidentally left Gear trapped
inside a woman's body, everyone pretty much agrees that he's more
comfortable there. While that may be true, Gear is still adjusting to
his new body, and is constantly discovering new (and often fun)
perks."
-
High
Maintenance. 2004-now.
-
"About a woman named Jessica Mason, her friends and their fight
to keep one city safe for the unwanted transgendered, queers and
freaks of the world." MTF and FTM characters. Quite dark.
Violence and abuse triggers. Web MA
-
Kismetropolis.
2005-now.
- "an occasionally-autobiographical, occasionally based on true stories
webcomic about woman named Jamie Kingston, who wishes for a life less ordinary...
and gets it — in spades."
-
Laura
Seabrook's Web Comix. 2006.
- A variety of material. Web MA
-
Lean
On Me. 2000-2006.
-
Lean On Me is about LBGT youth who were in high school
when the strip began, and are now college-age. Jade says about
the strip: "Nobody can tell you who you are or what's right for
you. You *must* do what you *feel* is *right* for *yourself*! Don't
listen to what other people say, especially people who don't know
you and care about you. Nobody can define you but yourself!
Sometimes it's hard to find people that feel exactly the way you
do who can understand and support you, but they do exist!"
Books
available!
-
misfile. 2004-now.
-
Misfile is one of a large number (well, as such things
go) of comics with the theme of accidental gender transformation,
usually in the MTF direction. Angels, mistakes, cars, boobs. Chris
also draws Building 12.
Books
available!
-
The Mundane
Circus. 2005-now.
- I'm not even going to try to describe what you'll find at The
Mundane Circus, but you'll be sorry if you don't check it out.
A book is in the works. Web MA
-
Pastel
Defender Heliotrope. 2004-2007.
- There's quite a bit more on this site. Please go explore!
-
Replica Saga. 2005-now.
- Tara draws a cluster of strips. Web-MA
-
Second Stage.
2003-2006.
- Most of the strips seem to have disappeared, unfortunately.
-
Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki.
2002-now.
-
Kanazuchi Yuuki watches a magical girl DVD that is a lot more
than it seems. He ends up being transformed into a magical girl
and fights much of the Norse pantheon. (It's a lot more
complicated than that, of course!)
-
Transe-Generation.
2001-now. Several hundred insightful drawings.
-
This is not exactly a comic strip. More a sketches from life kind
of thing. Somewhat earthy at times. Lots of very good FTM, MTF
and bi-gender inside jokes and political commentary.
Book
available!
-
Triquetra
Cats. 2004-now.
-
Triquetra Cats is set a ways in the future, and centers around
three high school girls (who had been hidden, disguised as boys)
with magical powers. Though the central characters are young
adults, there's a good deal of gory violence.
Web-MA
-
Venus
Envy. 2001-now. Book available on the site.
-
Venus Envy is an online comic revolving around Zoe
Carter, a young MTF transwoman. Other continuing characters
include Larson, a young FTM transman, and other interesting
characters from all over the LBGTQ spectrum. Has been dormant
for some time. Web MA
-
Venus
Ascending. 2004-now.
-
A fun trekkie spin-off of Venus Envy.
-
The
Wotch. 2002-now. Also check out spin-off comic,
Cheer, by Tselsebar.
-
Magick and sex changes, mostly MTF and inter-species. Well written
and drawn; lots-o-fun. Very lite on sexuality.
These are the other comics I follow. All of these have LBG/queer
characters or themes, or are at least queer friendly.
-
Capitol Hill. 2007-now.
-
A new comic about life in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. Can anyone
be as clueless as Kenneth?
-
Dykes
to Watch Out For. Began long ago as a print comic.
-
Lot's of genderqueer content and savvy political commentary.
-
The
Devil's Panties. 2001-now.
-
It's not Satanic porn, but it's damn funny!
Now also a print
comic! Ask at your local comics store.
-
Girls
With Slingshots. 2005-now.
-
A messed up chick, a talking cactus; what more could you want?
(Anything that Danielle draws! She is so good.)
-
Liliane,
Bi-Dyke. 2004-now.
-
Autobiographical comic with strong emotional angle, cats and a dog.
Books available on her site and in progressive stores.
-
megatokyo. 2000-now.
-
One of my favorite web/print comics for so many reasons, not the least of which
is that it is l33t!
Books available!
-
Minimum
Security. 1999-now.
-
Biting political commentary and satire. You've seen some of
these strips in various radical magazines and papers. Book
available.
-
Social (Life) Sciences.
2008-.
-
College Students Jane and Roxy are Gender Studies majors who fluctuate
between over-analyzing the world around them and being pathetically
ignorant to the contradictions in their own lives.
-
Something
Positive. 2001-now.
-
Open season on anything having to do with sex and relationships
and human idiocy. There are LBGT characters.
-
Wapsi Square. 2001-now.
-
"Wapsi Square follows the day to day stories and relationships
between a group of five post college friends and a school teacher
turned bartender." Well, yeh, but don't forget the Aztec god of
alcohol, the punk band Fermented Banana, and cute world-destroying
daemons! Books
available!
-
YU+ME. 2004-now.
-
Begins with Fiona in high school, unsure of her sexual identity.
To date she's fallen in love with the girl who moved in next
door, but that seems a dangerous course to follow, for both of them.
(The June 8, 2006 page is one of my all-time favorite comic pages!)
I really like YU+ME, and not only because it's a Michigan
product. Book available!
-
I
Was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space. 2007-now.
"A salicious tale of seduction and lust!" The retro adventures
of Susan, who sure is in a pickle. Good clean fun.
